General Meeting
The meeting began with an introduction of the officers and advisers followed by a recap of the past
semesters events and discussion of future activities.
March 20-26 is National Poison Prevention Week. Dr. Catherine
Tom, a pediatric pharmacist at the Childrens Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, spoke about awareness
projects done in the past. She presented an interactive brochure and talked about visual aids developed by her pharmacy students,
demonstrations done to assess the knowledge of parents and children, and sharing information from the Poison Control Center.
P.S. 124 in Chinatown agreed to allow pharmacy students to make a presentation about poisons to an assembly of about 150 children
in the first grade and kindergarten. Another option is to attend parent conferences the week before National Poison Prevention
Week on March 15 or 16 to educate the family so that they can help at home.
Griffin Dong and Sraddha Thapa, pharmacy
practice residents at the Manhattan VA hospital, will be speaking on March 21.
On April 4, the editor of AJHP will
speak about publishing in biomedical journals
Dr. Cicero will be hosting a speaker from LexiComp on April 25.
The
College Bowl will be held in New Brunswick, NJ on April 21.
Discount rates are being offered to NYSCHP members who
would like to attend the Philadelphia pharmacists meeting at Trump Plaza in Atlantic City on March 3 and 4.
On February
28, PSSNYs President-elect will present current legislation issues and discuss a plan of action for Albany Day (March 29).
A NYSCHP member will be speaking about CDTM on March 7.
ASHP is having a meeting in Boston June 11-15. The
cost is about $100 depending on the number of days.
Daryl stressed the importance of being involved at the state level
and handed out applications for NYSCHP. He discussed his involvement nationally with the ASHP student forum technology
and education subcommittee and explained how other students can get involved.
Two LexiComp drug references were raffled
off, and the meeting adjourned.

SSHP General Meeting
The meeting opened with discussion of attendance.
Due to conflicts in scheduling, different groups are forced to compete for time slots. Students are unable to participate
in various activities, and overall attendance has been poor. An attempt will be made to facilitate communication between the
various student leaders to ensure equal opportunity for all groups to hold meetings at times when members are able to attend.

A website was recently developed for the group. Daryl will submit the address to the national organization
so that the student organization at LIU can be nationally recognized. The address is ashp-liu.tripod.com.
Last month
SSHP hosted a speaker from the Poison Control Center. A summary is posted on the website.
The clinical skills competition
was held on Friday, October 29. The winners are Elliot and Chana Berkovitz. The couple will be attending the ASHP midyear
meeting where they will have the chance to compete nationally.
NYSCHP will hold their winter educational January 6-9
in Killington, VT. The cost is $245 per person. The cost includes registration, lodging, and meals.
Applications for
the ASHP leadership award were passed out to members. Application requirements include a completed application form, a resume
or curriculum vitae, a personal essay of no more than 750 words, and three letters of recommendation. The application is also
posted on the website.
Dr. Rickles discussed the possibility of writing an article for the NY Times about the emerging
role of pharmacists in the NY health care system. The NY Times as national and international recognition and would enable
the article to be read by millions. The article would describe the evolution of pharmacy practice over the last 30 years placing
emphasis on the changes in education and services available. Other publishing options were also considered, such as smaller
newspapers and brochures in retail pharmacies.
The meeting adjourned upon arrival of pizza and soda.

SSHP General Meeting
The student society was formed several years ago but failed
to become active. The meeting was the first official meeting signifying the organization's revival.
Lindsay Garris '07 volunteered to take the responsibility of secretary-treasurer.
Daryl Schiller '06, student society president, spoke about
the benefits of membership with the New York State Council of Health-system Pharmacists (NYSCHP)--as was suggested by Dr.
Kirschenbaum, NYSCHP school liason--and handed out membership applications.
Daryl spoke about
the benefits of attending the ASHP midyear meeting such as learning about pharmacy, meeting other pharmacy students and professionals, etc.
P-5 and P-6 students will be eligible to compete in the Clinical Skills Competition in October. The rules of the competition
were explained, as well as what students should expect.
ASHP is looking for students in the first year of the
professional program to fill positions in various subcommittees. A resume and brief letter of interest are required for application.
Daryl gave out contact information for a few different pharmacy directors at local hospitals who are looking
to hire part-time interns.
A representative from the NYC Poison Control Center will speak on Wedesday,
October 27, at 11:00. The speaker is an alumni of the College of Pharmacy who graduated in 1986.
APhA would like assistance with a diabetes prevention and
medications counselling event to be held at the Woodstock Senior Center in Manhatten on October 24, from 9-2:00. The center
is located at 127 West 43rd Street between 6th and 7th Avenue.
